Each short course will run on six consecutive Mondays starting on Monday 16th September 2019 from 9.30 am – 1.30 pm with further dates available later in the year.

Covering all aspects of soft furnishing from Curtains, Roman blinds, Pelmets and Cushions; all taught to a professional workroom standard by experienced Interior Designer Ginny Peace who ran her own business for more than 20 years and has been making for almost thirty years.

Teaching is in small groups of six to ensure that everyone gets enough individual attention.

The cost is £450 and includes all materials and a set of comprehensive notes for each project as well as coffee and pastries on arrival each day and regular top ups during the morning!

Weeks 1-3

An introduction to window treatments, – Blinds or Curtains?

With a wealth of experience gained over many years, Ginny will teach you how to design the best option to suit your room.

We will also look at the following:

  • Curtain hardware options and poles and how to fit them properly.
  • Measuring and estimating the correct amount of fabric for your project
  • Installing and hanging your curtains

We will then progress to making a sample lined and interlined curtain with a taped heading, with a further demonstration on how to use hand pleated headings, pattern matching fabrics and dealing with multiple widths of curtains.

Week 4

All you need to know about Roman Blinds – how to measure and design them to the best effect for your room.

Covering:

  • All aspects of blind safety and the required safety regulations
  • How to estimate fabric amounts
  • Wooden batten or rotary chain mechanism – pros and cons
  • Installing your finished blind

Progressing to making a sample lined and interlined blind.

Week 5

Flat pelmets – what they are and how to use them to best effect.

Flat pelmets are a really useful addition in any project and can be used over curtains or roman blinds.

Covering:

  • Calculating the correct dimensions of your pelmet
  • Design ideas
  • Estimating fabric amounts

Progressing to making a sample flat pelmet to match the roman blind made in Week 4

Week 6
Cushions – cushions complete any scheme but are surprisingly difficult to get right!

Covering:

  • Design ideas and different styles
  • Fabric amounts and trims
  • Inserting zips

We will then make a simple zipped cushion cover to take home which complements all the other items covered in the weeks before. Ginny will also demonstrate how to make piping for a cushion as well as showing how to make a couple of different styles.

This course is suitable for beginners and those with a little experience alike.

It would be useful to have your own machine and please bring it with you if you can. If not, I have a couple of machines here for people to use. I can give you some advice on the best machine to buy, alternatively I recommend that you visit World of Sewing in Tunbridge Wells, Croydon or Pratts Bottom www.worldofsewing.com. They give excellent advice – tell them I sent you!

Please also bring :

A simple sewing kit:

  • Dressmaking scissors
  • 2” glass headed pins,
  • 5m steel tape measure (the type used for DIY)
  • Sewing needles
